MAPS, DIRECTIONS & TIPS
PALOMAR MOUNTAIN STATE PARK
19952
State Park Rd. Palomar CA 92060 |
|
Is this your first time to the park?
Here are some important tips for a pleasant visit: |
-
for printer friendly directions to the park.
If you're relying on
Google Maps, please note that the last couple of steps in their
directions are inaccurate.
-
Note that there
are
no gas stations on Palomar Mountain.
-
Unless you're driving
a rugged vehicle,
it's best not to attempt to come up Nate Harrison Grade.
-
Cell phone coverage is non-existent
in most parts of the park, and spotty at best on the rest of the mountain.
If you're desperate for cell phone coverage, go the Boucher Summit (site
of the fire tower and lookout).
Here's a map;
look for the binocular icon in the park's SW corner. Or try the parking
lot at the Silvercrest Picnic area. You might get cell coverage there
depending on the conditions.
-
BRING CASH OR CHECK. The park doesn't take
credit cards, and the nearest ATM is 4 miles back. If you have to self
register, note that the entrance fee for day use is $8.00 per vehicle.
-
For your comfort and safety:
- In the summer gnats can be a
problem, depending on the time of day, so bring bug repellent
during warm weather.
-
Check weather conditions and come prepared. Bring a sweater
even if you don't think you'll need it; you can always leave it in
the car, and it'll be there if the weather unexpectedly changes on
the summit.
- Mountain lions are sporadically
sighted in the park; follow
basic safety guidelines for minimizing mountain lion
encounters and what to do if you do come across a mountain lion. Please report any sightings to the
ranger or park staff.
- There's plenty of poison oak
throughout the park, often close to the trails. Learn how to
recognize it and
how to treat it if you're exposed.
- Bring water! There are no water
fountains along the trails.
